Bloom Report

Hello List,

It's probably too soon to be posting a bloom report with so many stalks
showing which have not - but I've waited a while to have an arilbred and
aril bloom so I could see the real thing:

OPALS FOR ETHEL (McAllister '84) and this demonstrates my frustration with
catalog descriptions. I know it's impossible to describe a bloom
perfectly, but no way does "light blue w/blue beard, yellow in throat" give
an indication of the appearance of this bloom. In fact, I'm wondering if
it is mislabeled as well. Trouble is, I suppose, that my reference points
for color and description are so sadly out of step. No mention is made of
the dappled effect on the bloom, and that is the characteristic which makes
it most distinctive. Nor would I exactly describe the color as light blue,
more of an air force lavender maybe? on a translucent white background with
just the barest hint of yellow cream in it. In any case, I'm delighted.
Perhaps it is better to be surprised.

Also, TANTALIZING TIDBIT (Cross '98). This one is too subtly colored for
me to even attempt to describe. Perhaps Libby Cross will give a better
description of this median and tell me how tall it was supposed to grow.
I'm sure it didn't make it this year.
