Hi Paul... Kathyguest here - fueled with high-octane coffee and lots of
opinions and such.

First of all, bearded irises come in different "flavors" or sizes. Generally
the shorter the iris, the earlier the bloom.

MDB = Miniature Dwarf Bearded: plants with bloomstalks up to 8"... usually
unbranched - bloom in early May (here anyway... this year we'll see them in
April!)

SDB = Standard Dwarf Bearded: plants with bloom stalks between 8-15".. some
branching - blooms after MDB's.

IB = Intermediate Bearded - bloom stalks 16-27" (soon to change... we've got
a 1" gap in there <BG>) - stems straight & branched... look like a short TB

MTB = an oxymoron - Miniature Tall Bearded... the miniature refers to the
flower, the tall refers to the stalk. Also called "table iris" and should be
fragrant. Stalks are 16 - 27", slender, graceful stalks... flowers
proportionally small - blooms about the same time as the IB's.

BB - Border Bearded - Identical to a TB, only proportionally smaller. Stalks
16-27", stiffly erect stems with flowers in proportion to hight. Bloom with
TB's

TB... Tall Bearded Iris... Queen of the Garden (wait... I thought I was Queen
of the Garden??), anyway... flower stalks over 27"... stiffly erect and
branched stems... large flowers... bloom in early June (here).

Then we get into:

Sib - siberians.. a beardless iris
JI - Japanese iris or I. Ensata... another beardless... siberians on steriods
LA - Louisianas...
SPU - spurias

(and I'm probably going to be told this information is available somewhere
else, but I'm on a roll here)
