: I have a question about hybridizing. I am curious as to how long after
opening the
: stigmatic lips are receptive to pollen. Could pollen be used on a flower
that has
: been open for a day? Or should pollination take place ONLY the morning it
opens?
Rusty, As you may remember, I work in the education system, which means I
get home after 3 pm each and every day unless I lie off (*gasp*) or it is a
weekend. Therefore, *almost all* of my pollinations are made in the
evening. Now, I know it works, because one year, I planted 15,000, (yes!)
seeds [and don't ask!]. This past fall, I only planted a mere 4312. Now,
I would say that it *might* be necessary to make a few more crosses than
one thinks ones needs to get there, but it still works.
Another principle that I use in nearly every case is to put the same pollen
on one stalk, therefore ending up with 3-4 (and I try not to ever have more
than 4) pods of one cross. Gives u more to choose from when planting, if
they germinate well, (I throw out the weak looking ones, say 10-15%). And
I feel one needs as many as possible to show the true possibilities of a
good ides (the cross).
Hope that helps.
