Ellen, you first crocus on April 8th is at least two week behind Ottawa,
which confirms the difference in zones (4B compared to your 3) despite
the fact that we do not live too far apart. I am just entering my third
week of I. reticulata with the cultivar colour changing from the purple
to very dark blue (I have no record of the cultivar names although I
believe the purple is Pauline). Light blue should follow. It is
interesting to note that danfordiae opened a few days after reticulata
this year when "usually" flowering starts at the same time.
I was also astonished to see the first signs of Hemodactylus tuberosus
appearing above the soil. As this is classed as a Zone 7-8 plant it
seems that we have either had a very mild winter or the hardiness is
incorrect. I might note that these plants are not in a protected part
of the garden. I planted it as a gamble, see the archives, and did not
give it much hope of surviving. Now, let see if it flowers!
Ian, in Ottawa where we are having a beautiful period of cool sping
weather. Ideal for long bloom period for individual flowers.
