At the show I judged Saturday (Southern California Iris Soc.) the potential for
a conflict came up, and I wasn't sure what to do.
The schedule stated, "Species and Californicae growing in pots may be entered in
named sections; but, no plant grown in a container will receive any award higher
than a blue ribbon." [Punctuation NOT mine]
The Handbook says, "Unnamed stalks, potted exhibits ... are not eliigible for
AIS ribbons and awards...."
I asked the show chair about it, and he said that SCIS had always done things
that way (but no one had entered potted plants recently--or this year either, as
it turned out), but just to be sure he had specifically asked Mike Moller when
the schedule was submitted. The schedule was approved without comment in that
area.
Fellow judges--and others--if there had been potted entries, what would you have
done, and why?
-Gerry, feeling more confused than usual (as usual ;-)
