Orthene and Irises

Hi iris lovers. I'm back in the list...
My question is: May I use Orthene to spray my irises against a bug that
shreds the leaves?. Could be just snails, could be leaf miners, could be
something worse... Is Orthene a safe insecticide for irises?. Please let me
know ASAP, as I'd like to spray the sooner...
