Mike,
     This sounds to me like it could be possible, as is the possibility
that some other insect(s) could be involved.  Maybe it is a combination of
the two.  
     Here, I have removed such pods from the Louisiana Irises that have
bloomed.  I want them to get established good before I try to hybridize.
