Almost exactly a month ago, I mentioned buying some Higo irises that
were advertized with colours quite beyond the range of known varieties.
Well, one of these, the yellow one which was identified by the
wholesaler as Aichinokagayaka, has flowered. It fits the description of
that variety but does not match in anyway the photo on the package. The
photo is clearly of an I. ensata cultivar but the colour is a dark
yellow. In fact, the actual flower is a perfectly good pseudocorus!
Yellow with the typical brown pattern of the pseudocorus. A little
flimsy, the standards are very short (1.5cm at most) and the style is
"toothed" at the end. The actual description given for Aichinokagawyaka
fits the plant that I have flowering at this time. The problem arises
when one tries to compare this with the photograph. That is of a quite
different plant and has been printed with colours that are not related
to the actual flower photographed.
I am now waiting for the red one to flower. The plants are developing
more slowly.
