A large Opuntia plant proved to be a deterrent to cats when I lived in
Kentucky. Thinking of Opuntias, I have found some growing wild on our lot
here. As the garden gets bigger, the Opuntias stay, and are being
incorporated into the plant beds.
One thing you can do with the cats is to give them a gentle push with
a corn broom when you catch them where you don't want them. They dislike
the broom, and will tend to avoid places they know will get them "broomed."
Notice that I said gentle: I am not advocating swatting them.
