Re: My favorite iris...

Even thought the buds on the white I. tectorum are swelling-- which always
gets me overstimulated--- I am going to stick with the same choice I made last
year when a variation on this question was posed to tht list. In fact I'm
going to copy in the paragraph I wrote then. I will add that you can see the
darling on the HIPS page at http://www.worldiris.com/. The color is a bit too
rosy in the picture, but you can appreciate her adorableness.

If I could have only one iris, bearded or beardless, species or hybrid, it
would be, without question, QUAKER LADY, introduced by Bertrand Farr of
Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, in 1909. This is a lovely smaller (27") diploid
iris, with beautifully shaped crisply-textured petite blooms. The standards
are a warm, translucent cocoa and the falls have a complex iridescent overlay
which results in a luminous lavender effect. Virtually impossible to
photograph well. The throat and beards are golden, and the entire bloom seems
gold dusted. The plant is vigorous, trouble free, and increases well in a tidy
manner that produces a very attractive clump which will integrate nicely into
plantings of perennials, or stand alone as a specimen. The proportions of the
entire plant are perfect; the stalks are strong and straight, the shape and
placement of the buds is very pleasing, the foliage is attractive. It has
a nice long bloom season. I love this iris very much because it is a
beautiful, magical, little flower, and a superb plant in all respects.

Want to ornament your estate with one? No problem! Lots of fine nurseries
offer her. Drop me a note if you want some referrals.
