I have heard that it is a good idea to remove the spathes
(papery covering) from any seed pods in order to prevent water
collecting
and possible rot. This had never been an issue here as we get zero rain
usually. Well yesterday I was inspecting to see how many of my crosses
had taken and I found APHIDS under virtually every spathe and in some
others both spittlebugs and earwigs (more gross than dangerous). I hope
just
peeling back all the spathes and wiping them off will be enough to deter
them - there are no Aphids anywhere else, they were just hiding out. So
all
ye budding Iris fornicators (apologies to those offended by my
earthiness) get out there and protect your pods.
