No, I haven't gotten Stockton. Usually, theirs is the last one I
get but well worth the wait, I guess. Sutton's Green Thumber hasn't come
yet either, come to think about it.

Yesterday's mail brought the catalog from Rockytop (Phil
Williams). There is a very interesting write-up on THORNBIRD, and I will
quote the most interesting part. This is Phil writing, not me..."And...
the picture on the front cover of the A. I. S. BULLETIN is not
(underlined)... I repeat...not (underlined) THORNBIRD!"

Remember back in October when this picture of THORNBIRD appeared,
it stirred up a lot of comment and many (including myself) could not
identify the cover picture.

Also, in his descriptions of many irises Phil comments that the
judges failed to vote for many worthy varieties because the judges were
napping. I don't think this tells the entire story. Many good irises lack
distribution, and it is the hybridizers' fault for not sending their
introductions to the conventions and regionals and even dealers. Judges
who spend their hard-earned money to go to conventions and regionals will
see the good ones. It is up to the hybridizers to get the irises where
they will be seen by the most judges. I looked in last years Detroit
Convention book, and many of these unrewarded varieties were not listed so
how can they be winners of AIS awards if they are not sent to conventions
and viewed where the most judges congregate?

This post represents my own observations and is not a critique
of the Rockytop catalog or a criticism of my good friend Phil. In fact,
my order is ready to mail tomorrow!
