Interesting. Sort of along the same line, when we moved into our present
house there were ( and still are ) large beds of TB iris. Come the
blooming season I found that they were all relatively small flowered
purples except for a some really large flowered ones with apricot standards
and purple falls by side of the house. After the second summer in the
house I finally got around to digging them up and dividing the rhizomes
properly ( they hadn't been touched in something like 20 years). Next year
I had another variety of purple, a lot of whites, and a boat load of
yellows, as well as far more of the apricot and purple than I had thought.
