Greetings, and Happy Spring!
I would like to call something to your attention, please.
I have been informed by the Treasurer that there is no HIPS rhizome sale
planned for this year. It is not very likely that this situation will change,
so those of you who were planning on obtaining plants for your collections
from a 1998 HIPS sale may wish to examine other options. The soundest course
of action is to obtain some catalogs from those sources which list in ROOTS
and make your selections from the many lovely cultivars they offer for sale. I
include the 1998 HIPSource list below for your convenience. I would advise
sending in requests for catalogs promptly and getting your selections made
quickly since there may be a flurry of activity when the Spring ROOTS comes
out. To my knowledge not all the catalogs on the list are out yet, but some
have been out for some time and their stocks maybe getting depleted. Also, we
have some new nurseries listing with us this year and there may be more
interest in them when they appear in ROOTS. So I would recommend sending off
for any catalogs that interest you without delay.
It should be remembered that a listing on the Commercial Source page of ROOTS
is a paid notice, one for which HIPS and HIPSource are very grateful as these
sources underwrite the page financially and thereby make this useful
information available to you. But a listing on this page does not constitute
an endorsement of any listing nursery by this office or by HIPS. We cannot
warranty your satisfaction with any transaction. This office, however, acts as
a referral service and is always interested in hearing about any experiences
that are out of the ordinary, whether positive or otherwise, that you may have
had with any of these sources. I solicit all responsible information about
service and cooperativeness, or about plant quality, and I am particularly
interested in comments this year as there are some new sources listed. Also,
please address all questions about catalog contents to the nursery issuing the
catalog itself. They are best able to clarify, explain, or answer any
questions about their terms of trade or catalog copy. Please note that the
information on the catalog list below supersedes all previous listings in
ROOTS.
If you are looking for referrals to places to buy specific cultivars please
feel free to contact me off list with your questions. This office has
information provided by some commercial sources about things not listed in
their catalogs. Answers for questions about sources will be provided off list
to avoid creating stampedes for things in short supply. And, of course,
inquiries from HIPS members always take precedence in busy times.
As always, if a catalog which lists older or historic irises, or historically
important Iris species, comes your way and you think HIPSource should know
about it, kindly take a moment to drop us a note with particulars. We would
appreciate it!
The list of 1998 Sources follows. Happy hunting!
