Celia asked,
<< what other vegetarian monsters have you seen gobbling our fans?>>
Slug damage can be pretty dramatic and I'd have been concerned this year with
some of the noshing I've seen, but in the right raking light you can always
spot the silver trails and that pretty well has reassured me it isn't the big
B. I've also seen identical damage on the daylilies.
On two ocasions I've seen some sort of leaf miner activity. Clear, meandering
mindless spirals that go on for a few inches and then stop. Further
investigation showed no evidence of significant damage, or persistent
purposeful movement toward the rhizome.
Thrips will also eat your foliage, especially on beardless things, leaving it
striped, stippled, and usually dusty and/or rusty looking.
