Re:Cult:Distinctive Iris Blooms

At our recent show, I was hit with such questions as "Is this GOOD
SHOW or GRATUITY, MIND READER or SPIRIT WORLD, CORAL CHALICE or CORAL
STRAND? When somebody shoves one of these in my face and pops the
question of what is it, I honestly cannot tell them. Many times the check
lists don't help much.

Three irises blooming in my garden today cannot be mistaken for
any other and all were aglow this morning with dew and rain droplets from
a brief shower. They were begging for admirers to come and see what
happened over night as they unfurled their buds and expanded into their
full bloom appearance. Oh's and ah's were heard over the garden as we
looked at these for the first time this season. Pictures were taken which
I hope will turn out well and show up later on our web page.

LIPSTICK LIES, Blyth '85, is the 'barliest' of the plicatas. At a
distance, this appears to be just another white. But, on closer
observation, there are those blue haft lines and those fiery tangerine red
beards. I have not seen another like it.

INTO THE NIGHT, Schreiner's '89, is a midnight purple self. What
sets if apart? There is an eighth inch edge of lighter blue violet on the
fall margins. Wavy and ruffled. You cannot mistake it for something
else.

STRATAGEM, Ghio '89, is a rosy brown (more rosy) with deeper
rouged cheeks (hafts that are solid and not thumbprints). The red beards
add a touch of glossiness to the creation. In a color class of one!

There are lots of look-alikes out there, but these are a few
that are truly distinctive and would be hard to mistake for others.
