My hens are enclosed in an 8mx8m run, with 8 ft high fencing for their
own safety. They are well fed, which they need to be because absolutely
nothing grows in that enclosure. There are 10 hens and a rooster - not
really a lot for that size area. I used to let them in the garden to
clean up every now and then, when I had a chook friendly dog. I can't
even do this with my dog tied up now, as the neighbors dogs free range.
They were always very useful for tilling the veg garden. I would dump a
large pile of manure and compost and spread it out roughly, and they
would till it in for me. I would never trust them in my iris beds,
knowing the mess they are capable of making.
