This vole block sounds great.  Do you know were I could get it.  Or a place online that might have it.  Never heard of it before.  Thanks a lot for the information.

  I understand that a product called Vole Block (same as PermaTill) works well
  when the product is incorporated into the planting area when the plants are
  set.  It is a fired-clay or slate product that is like kitty litter with
  very sharp edges which evidently deters the voles. Moles, of course, don't
  bother the hostas, except to provide ready-made tunnels for the voles. It is
  a permanent fix as it doesn't degrade.  The product is also used to loosen
  heavy soils and clays. Just a thought,
