If your soil is sandy, you may not have to worry as much about dampness.
However winter mulching is a real good idea for your new iris as that will
help protect them from heaving if winter starts early.
A late frost usually shouldn't kill your iris, but it can result in short or
twisted stalks, less bloom and other anomolies. It can kill seedlings or at
least it did here in southern jersey... I'm not real sure about beardeds, but
for beardless, if you plant anything in the spring however, you should be
more careful about a late frost. I made a cold frame for a bed of beardless I
planted and they weathered that late cold snap really well.
This can get complicated, no?
