Re: CULT: more on rhizome size, watering and leaves

I second that Donald.

This year most rhizomes were smaller than normal. We had a lot of rain this spring. Sun does not shine when it is raining ( not often) . I thing lack of sun was the reason for the smaller rhizomes.

Sure got some big ones from Malevil Gardens in Texas. Even a big Lemon Chess Walter.

Great post Charles Schroter! All of what you say makes
sense. I especially am taken with your bit on high day and
night temps and how they alter growth. It would also
explain why cultivars grown in shade with protection from
some of the extreme heat generated here would then grow
larger rhizomes than those in full sun...and why in more
temperate areas it would have exactly the opposite effect.

I would note, too, that not every place in California where
I've purchased rhizomes sent the jumbo size! Good
rhizomes, but not jumbos. I have also received some I
would consider jumbo size from areas other than the west
  coast.

All in all this seems the most satisfactory explanation of
how a jumbo size rhizome gets there. IMO, of course.
Others may still have another viewpoint.
