Hi Jan and others:
In my part of the American south, "Naked Ladies" are Lycoris, specifically
L. squamigera. As far as I know, this bulbous plant is one of the few
Lycoris species with any real degree of hardiness...still, I doubt if it
survives much north of, say, Indianapolis.
It is also called "Surprise Lilies" due to it's habit of throwing up a
3-foot bloom stalk in a matter of 48 hours--so, coming across a stalk of
that size with a beautiful pink(-infused lavender blue) inflorence of 3 or
4 trumpet-shaped blooms. The flowers themselves are quite large, so a
stalk in full bloom is quite a sight--especially coming in the heat of high
summer (mine have just finished blooming).
An amateur botanist in Nashville, Tenn., Sam Caldwell, worked for years to
increase the hardiness of selected Lycoris cultivars--but one could argue
with little result.
