Tom (and others interested in growing these, ahem, "unclothes-with-leaves-at-bloom-time" bulbs):  I grow these things, some bought from a commercial source and some given to me by a local gardening friend, and I can tell you most certainly that they are hardy farther north than Indianapolis.  I am located in far northwest Iowa, well into zone 4, and they come up every year, multiply and bloom, and they get no winter protection here.  Somewhere your friend picked up erroneous information.
