For treating soil, Iron sulfate supposedly is faster acting than
elemental sulfur.

I've played with treating my irrigation water with citric acid. As I
recall, about a half cup of granular citric acid in a Miracle Grow
"sprayer" designed for in-line use treated 30 or more gallons of water.
Citric acid has some buffering capacity and is not as likely as acetic
acid (vinegar) to lower the pH too much. I've done this only sparingly
and don't know the long-term effects of adding the citric acid to the
soil.  It should, however, be biodegradable.
