A report on the solarization of a new raised iris bed.
A raised bed was started on the 5th of june and filled with a base of
soil and recycled promix topped by local topsoil. Local topsoil is
that stripped from construction sites. The soil is sold by the
developer to local landscape yards. It consists of lightly
consolidated yellow clay amended with weed seeds.
The bed was watered and a/o June 20 was covered by black plastic and
remained until Aug 1 when the cover was removed. To date the
following weeds have been spotted and removed:
1 nutgrass seedling
1 unidentified weed seedling
During the period of solarization the weather was very warm with my
thermomter registering over 100 degrees several times. This is
unusual as the average day time high is 89 degrees. The higher
temperatures contributed to the success.
A very excellent way to rid flower beds of noxious weeds and/or weed
seeds.
