Hi Jes - the archives are full of discussion about growing irises from
seed, but most of the discussion is about how to improve germination or
speed up time to first bloom in parts of the country where we sometimes
have poor germination or it takes many years to see the first bloom.
If that isn't a concern where you are, the 'normal' way to grow bearded
irises from seed is to wait until the pods mature and start to split
open, then harvest the seeds, put them in a protected spot indoors to
dry for a few weeks (a small cup or open paper envelope), then store
them out of the way (not refrigerated) until winter weather is
approaching. Plant the seeds outdoors where they will be exposed to
normal rain and freezing weather. Make sure they don't dry out. They
should germinate in the spring and will take anywhere from 9 months to
several years to first bloom, depending on your climate, growing
conditions, and other inexplicable things (genetics?).
It's always easier to answer questions & interpret comments if you
include your location - climate makes a big difference.
