Walter, I think you hit the nail on the head when you wrote "it all depends on where a person lives." By now I have planted/replanted every rhizome that needed it, was mailed, or was bought at sales or auctions this summer. Some have had to go into pots, despite my feeling like Ellen Gallagher about doubling the work. The garden spot for which these rhizomes are destined is at present occupied with vegetables that are not yet ready to be harvested. But I try to get everything in dirt by the end of July or as soon thereafter as possible. Otherwise, not likely to have a well-developed root system to avoid heaving in the winter. I generally provide these new plants a winter mulch, regardless of when they were planted. You're so blessed not to have this kind of timeline you need to follow, but then I know from what you write that you have other problems which don't bedevil us who live in the cold regions. Again, "it all depends on where a person lives." Knowing the cultural requirements of one's area is paramount, which is why the advice/opinions/suggestions on iris-talk, though very interesting, are not neces-
sarily the best ones to follow, if they come from areas very different from one's own. Still, let's keep hearing them, and we can try things that work for others, just maybe have to alter the timetable.
