Re: CULT:Watering Twice a Day

Walter, you and I must have somewhat similar climates, though I'm sure you get more rain. I am fighting rot like crazy in my guest irises. I've used everything I've heard of, Clorox, Comet, antibacterial soap, and now I'm going to try garlic. At least I know that won't hurt anything. As a last resort, when I see I'm about to lose a clump, I dig it, clean the rhizomes the best I can, sterialize them in Clorox solution and pot the remains. I have three pots full in the house now growing nicely in the cool. I have four more that would have been beautiful with several increases started that I dug and treated this morning. They are drying now and will get potted tomorrow.

After another week of temperatures from 109-113, the irises all look yellow and brown; and we get irrigation this afternoon. More potting fun this week I'm sure.

I've just returned from our mountain cabin, which is about 20 degrees cooler than here, but this year has been just as dry. My irises up there in a fenced bed look green and healthy. They have even multiplied well. No rot at all to be seen, and they have only had water about once a month. They grow in decomposed granite and dust. I am amazed.

I guess it depends on where you live. If I were to
water newly-set irises twice a day in our August heat, I
would have the worst case of rot imaginable, which
would definitely inhibit root growth! I don't
set out anything in July or August anyway. Everything is
dried out for about a month or more, stripped of roots,
  and then potted.

sprinklers causes more rot than rainfall).
