I guess it depends on where you live. If I were to
water newly-set irises twice a day in our August heat, I
would have the worst case of rot imaginable, which
would definitely inhibit root growth! I don't
set out anything in July or August anyway. Everything is
dried out for about a month or more, stripped of roots,
and then potted.
Generally, I water the pots once a week if Mother Nature
doesn't supply moisture. A lot potted two weeks ago are
already sending roots out the drainage holes! They would
not do this if they were lined out in the open under the
hot sun here in hot soil that can burn your bare feet.
I still have not potted returned irises from the Memphis
convention. They have been hanging in onion sacks in the
hot garage because there are just too many to pot. Many are
happily sending out the 'golden nubs,'which are precursors
to new roots. They can stay out of the ground for another
two months when things cool down. Then you can work up the
soil, drop them, step on them, and watch them take root.
