Neil responds:

Most of my deliberate crosses took this year for a change. There
were some accidents, however. One of the tenant's cats went around
breaking down iris and breaking off my crosses (that cat
disappeared....), Verbena bud moth got into some others.

There were several spontaneous pods set that I left, thinking them of
interest--such as on Fogbound, Braggadocio and Lotus Land. Every one
of them was an empty balloon but one. The exception was on LADY EMMA!
I thought the Lady was sterile, but she set a pod on her own.
Another case of Bud moth got many of the seeds, however, but I did
get a few from the remaining segments.

I believe the wierd winter and spring weather may be have been
responsible for the odd results. Nearly all our primary bloom was
lost to the March freeze which dropped our temps from the mid
seventies to 22 degrees in a matter of hours (as often happens for
you, too). High seventies during December, then twenties in March.
Oh my.

Due to my ongoing illness and doctor's orders about not bending over,
doing much, most of my gardening this year has been by proxy. My
daughter has come from Middle Tennessee three times to weed, clean,
plant, reset and such. A couple of friends here helped prepare the
new beds for seedings, which are growing lustily despite the drought
(thanks to very costly city water), and I have had a crop of borers
that is unreal since I was unable to spray. Never again! I'll find
a way.
