Since I want to get rid of the cultivars & seedlings that are prone to
rot when they get overhead watering (garden hose or rain), I water
heavily and am not very consistent about it.
The rhizomes purchased this year are currently potted in a mix of equal
parts garden soil (rocks removed), potting soil, and sand to which I add
crushed limestone, low nitrogen mineral fertilizer, and about one part
alfalfa pellets to 6 parts of soil/sand/potting mix. This is the same
mix I use for seedlings, except that when I first line out the seedlings
in their big tubs/window boxes, I use more sand, at least at the
surface.
Walter Moores warned me last year that the alfalfa would tend to heat up
as it rots in a pot (he was right), I water twice a day or more when the
potting mix is fresh to keep it cool.
Daytime temperatures are currently in the upper 80s to 90s F, humidity
usually around 90% most of the day with afternoon showers off and on.
Some cultivars/seedlings rot immediately with this treatment. Those are
cultivars I do not want.
Anybody want to see a photo?
