Re: HYB: pollen & tough cultivars

While hunting for information on stains for pollen viability, I ran
across this in an abstract for a conference presentation::

<...pollen viability and tube growth reflect almost immediately any
irregularity in plant vigor long before the environmental stress becomes
visible on the plant..> [this statement is made like everybody(!) knows
this...]

So, Bill B, as you suggested (I think?), the pollen is the weak link.
And like I suspected, even tho I had good bloom this year (at least
compared to most years), the irises were probably too stressed to
produce much viable pollen or else they weren't able to form adequate
pollen tubes.

So, for what it's worth, here's a list of all the cultivars 'tough
enough' to produce enough viable pollen so that pods with normal looking
seeds developed:
ARMAGEDDON
CELEBRATION SONG
COLOR ME BLUE
CORAL BEADS (older)
DIABOLIQUE
FEEDBACK
GINGERBREAD CASTLE (older)
HARVEST OF MEMORIES
Hensler seedling
Mann DCGI13#1 (Dusky Challenger X Grape Ice)
Mann GACS-2-10 (Golden Apple X Celebration Song)
Mann IMCS various (Immortality X Celebration Song)
Mann pallida sdlg
Mann SOLBee3 (Sign of Leo bee seedling)
OCTOBER SPLENDOR
Parkhill 96-801 (pedigree inc. Winterscape)
PINAFORE PINK (older)
PINK QUARTZ
RINGO (older)
SEAKIST
STUNNING SERENADE
SULTAN'S PALACE
TEA LEAVES
UNDERSTUDY
Unk Emory Rd. bronze (historic)
UNK Peach spot
VIZIER
WHERE THERE'S SMOKE
WHOLE CLOTH (older)

In previous years, CELEBRATION SONG has been consistent in successfully
pollinating pods.

I'll have to look at my notes to see which cultivars that I tried to use
were failures. Anybody interested in the failures?

I am definitely going to move some of the cultivars I want as pollen
sources to the new "top of the ridge clay" garden.
