So Neil, do you think you had so much better success this year because
it was relatively cool during bloom season? I think you posted
previously that nearly every cross you tried was successful this year.
Can you suggest an upper limit for humidity for making successful
crosses? In the past, somebody posted that they made successful crosses
under an umbrella in the rain, I think, after protecting the bloom and
pollen.
Oh heck, why am I trying to figure this out - I'm probably stuck with a
low rate of success with my wretched growing conditions. The plants are
probably too stressed to produce viable pollen even if the weather on
the day of the cross is perfect.
<I rarely exceeded 50% takes. There were days when nothing took. But I
find
that true in NC also. Here, the factor is wet heat--just as
destructive as dry heat if not more so. Neil M in NC>
Bill - some hybridizers report some cultivars as being pod sterile.
