Lucky you! Mealy bugs are much easier to eradicate than scale, and from your description, it sure sounds like that's what you have. Safer Insecticidal Soap sprayed every week for three weeks will wipe them out entirely. I don't think ants move mealies around like they do aphids, but they do mine the honeydew that the mealies secrete. When I see ants in great numbers on my plants I know it's quite likely I have aphids, mealies or scale, so I look on the ants as a good thing....the tattle tales of the insect world :-)

Thank you, Janet for the web site about scale. After reading it, I see
that I misnamed my pests. They really must be mealy bugs. Their eggs
are laid on the outside of the fans and are covered with a cottony
material. The bugs themselves are pink since their white cottony coats
are worn off inside the leaves. Anyway I'm fighting it until I get rid
of it, and I'm fighting the ants that distribute it.
