I did not go into the distribution of convention guest plants in my earlier
post.
Along with the request for quests at a convention or regional, there are
several options listed for distribution of the plants when the convention is
over. They are:
1. Return all plants to the hybridizer.
2. Destroy all plants or selected plants.
3. Return selected plants.
4. Donate plants to the host gardener, to the region, to the regions's
auction.
Several years ago AIS made a policy that internet sales of newer introductions
at drastically reduced prices from convention gardens was in conflict with the
hybridizer's sale price.
I have never asked for the return of all plants that I have guested at a
convention or a regional.
I have asked that seedlings be destroyed when I decided not to introduce
them.
I always make generous donations to the host gardeners and the host society.
What they do with the plants *in their region* does not bother me at all, but
when they advertise my current introductions over the internet for a fraction
of my price, it does bother me. If internet sales of convention surpluses
become wide-spread, you can see people waiting for the internet sales and not
buying from the catalogs when they come out in the spring.
I did not send any guest plants to Wichita, but I did send plants to Kansas
City for the 2004 Convention, and that is why I have expressed an interest in
internet sales of guest convention plants.
