Re: HIST: ploidy question

Good morning all,

I've run into a bit of confusion on two Iris that have the same parantage,
but are quite different colors. Ironically I've had the same problem
getting some information on both of them. These are 'President Pilkington'
and 'Alice Harding'. Both are from Cayeux and both are apparently crosses
made in the late 1920's (introduced in the early '30's) of 'Iceberg' X
'Evolution'. David Payne-Joyce in his ancestry of 'Conjuration' lists both
of these as diploids, but I have found both listed as tetraploids
elsewhere, notably in the Randoph and Randolph list on the HIPS web site.
Just curious if anyone knows of any documentation of the chromosome number
of these two? Even growing the plants, I can't really tell which they seem
to be. They are smallish like many of the diploids, but more robust and
sturdy in my dry climate, with somewhat of the "feel" of tetraploids.
'President Pilkington' makes very large fruits for a diploid too. Haven't
seen fruits on 'Alice Harding yet'. Of course this is assuming I am even
growing the correct plants!!!

Thanks,

Dave
