TB: Hyb: Seed planting

I have over 900 seeds from 44 crosses that I have soaked for ten days,
changing water three times a day. They are in the original net baggies
I made to tie over the pods while they were ripening. When I remove the
seeds from the pods, they go right back into the baggies along with
their markers (pencil written tags from an office supply store). These
I tuck into the legs of panty hose, each one tied off separately and
recorded in order. This time I kept them in large glass bowls right by
my kitchen sink where I remember to change the water frequently. Last
year I put them in the toilet tanks. I'm glad I didn't this time. The
mechanism in one broke down, and I'm sure my seeds would have been
blamed if they had been there. :-)

I expect to chill them until late October when I will plant them
directly into the ground. By that time the bed where the guest irises
have recently been removed will have been prepared for them, and the
temperature will have fallen into the 80s with night time temperatures
in the 60s. I will plant in rows on either side of soaker hoses and
cover with seed blankets kept about 12 inches above them to hold in
moisture and moderate day and night time temperatures. The 16 X 70 foot
bed is going to be crowded if I get really good germination. Next
spring I'll let everyone know how they did.
