Never heard of using borax, but I do scatter Epsom Salts around!   I buy  
several boxes of it when on sale -- at the  clerk's looks, I explain it is for 
the garden ! !  It would be much cheaper I am sure if I could find a chemical 
supply place - don't really need the medically approved kind!    Ellen, I 
shudder at amy degrees below 40  this early in the Fall!
