I'm in Manitoba too.  I always put a rock or brick on top of newly planted
Rhz. after they are well frozen, as well as planting deeper.  Rock somewhat
stops heaving during spring thaw/freeze cycle.  Even so,  sometimes have to
press back into ground carefully with my foot in the spring.
