Chris-
I will field a reply to this from the heart of borer country.
Cygon is systemic, absorbed into the plant tissue. It stays there for about
two weeks. I assume the plant breaks it down and it needs to be reapplied.
Merit is longer lasting, but in my opinion is not as effective as Cygon. We
have
tried Merit (imidacloprid) for two seasons. We have applied as directed. In
the first year is was not as effective, so we doubled the recommended dosage
and still had borers. Since Merit is supposed to last for 6 months, we
applied
it well before temps were warm enough to trigger fan growth or borer egg
hatching. Areas treated with Cygon had far fewer borers than those treated
with Merit. I still hear much praise for Merit, and it is safer than Cygon,
but the
jury in my court remains in deliberation.
