RE: Merit/Cygon (was CULT: Anne-Lise)

Chris,

They are both systemics. That means that they have to be taken up by the plant. While you can drench with systemics, spraying allows for the chemical to be distributed through the plant quicker.

That said, the two chemicals work very differently. While both work on the nervous system, imidicloprid works on the nicotine pathway which is more selective for insects than mammals. It is therefore less toxic than organophosphates like Cygon 2E.

Hi Char,

Thanks for the information. I wonder when Merit will become available
up here ?

BTW, does anybody know if Cygon 2E works the way Merit does ? I read
that Merit gets absorbed through the plants root system and makes the
plant toxic to eat. Does Cygon 2E work this way as well or is it used
to treat the exterior of the fans and ground only ? I have found that
anything that I spray fans with, it never really appears to stick.
Should I add soap to the solution ?

Chris
