I'm a little late on this vein, but I thought I'd add the following
observation. It may or may not be relevant. I have never had Iris borer
except in a few imported plants; however, I do have serious problems with
Yucca borers. There are some differences though. The Yucca borer is a
large weevil larva, which is a beetle. The Iris borer is a moth larva.
Lepidoptera (moths) and Coleoptera (beetles) do not always respond the same
way to the same chemicals. However, I have found that Merit is totally
useless against Yucca borers, and Cygon is in fact the only chemical which
I have had luck controlling them with so far. The only other way to get
rid of them is to dig them out of the plants (which usually kills the
plants). My understanding is that Cygon is not manufactured any more? At
least I can't seem to get it. Too bad, another good chemical bites the
dust. It works best for Pine Tip Moth too, and that is a boring moth
larva. Merit works marginally on Pine tip moth, but usually needs
reapplied several times to get decent results. Cygon cleans them out the
first time through.
