For what it is worth-- I burned a two year plot of iris this spring to get
rid of grass and weeds. When I dug the iris recently I was pleasantly
surprised by two things: 1) the size of the rhizomes was huge compared to
past experience in Indiana, probably due to virgin soil and rain. 2) not
one borer was found in any (about 80 varieties) TB. I did find a few
scattered in medians, but minimal for 800 cultivars. In contrast, 70
varieties of TBs stored at a friend's garden for two years were absolutely
devastated by borers. Whole clumps were gone and not one variety was
without damage. Weed and debris control was not done in this garden.
Is this more evidence that good grooming is the most effective weapon
against borers or was I just lucky?

| Well....maybe it is overkill. Or, you could choose to look at it
| like "supplemental" insurance :). My observations of borers the last few
| years leave me wondering if we are seeing pesticide resistance in the
| critters.
