HYB:seedlings
First bloom as related to planting time was recently mentioned/discussed on
the list. Early planting has always been recommended as a way to get a high
percentage of first bloom. In the past, for a variety of reasons, I've found
myself planting in June or July.
Here is MY plan for the future. Prepare soil in the fall. (Inability to
prepare soil has been ONE of my problems) Determine your normal latest freeze
date. (In the past 20 years, the latest we've had a hard freeze was April 19. .
. . but, there were the 3 days in 2002 that I forgot to record.) Begin
planting on the latest freeze date. Watching local weather forecast can make this
more precise. Try to complete by May 15!! I have row cover to apply if
needed.
This brings us back to an earlier question of how to get the seedlings big
enough to transplant at such an early date. I don't have a screened in area to
nurture the seedlings like Linda M. does. Personally? I'm moving my cold
frames to a location near an electrical outlet and laying in a stock of miracle
grow!!
