Donald, what you've said here is basically what my friend said. He's had bad
results when placing the soil into the hole. He thinks it's something IN the
potting soil but it may well be that wicking effect. Thanks.

I doubt it is something IN the potting soil. That is not what Donald was saying. That the potting soil is different than the indigenous soil MAY be a problem. But that kind of issue can be worked out. It could also be a host of other factors,
