Alana: Dry, solid, yes, but as you have probably read on this list more than
once, the iris are a tough bunch (unless you just paid a lot for a beautiful
new rhizome!) and will survive and grow even if left out of the ground to the
point that they are getting dried up, shriveled, and very weary-looking. Not
the recommended course of action, of course, but it has happened, and the iris
survived and grew. A friend sent me one (along with some very live-looking
ones) a couple weeks ago, and he said it had been out of the ground a couple
months. It was a "give this one a try, too" thing, so I stuck it in dirt
along with the others. It grew and began showing new green growth as soon as
the others. So, though it isn't the best way to go, even neglect for too long
will not necessarily be the kiss of death.
