Re: RE: Fertilizer
No, haven't reviewed all the archives on the subject of Alfalfa pellets,
but I've read a lot of the messages, and I know there is a lot more there.
I'll do that.
I definitely need more organic material in my beds, and I'm sure good old
fashioned compost would likely be best. It's just hard to get good stuff
here, and I don't produce enough myself to make much of a difference. The
veggie garden is where the soil will be the best the fastest, because all
the veggies get tilled in after they freeze (unless diseased - which hasn't
happened yet). Put as much cow manure as I can gather in there too, but
that seems to promote rot in the Iris. No such annual tilling of organics
happens with the Iris or other perennial beds, have to work it in around
the plants when I can, or when I replant beds. Either way, the change is
very slow.
The Willow water sounds interesting too. I know this is rumored to be a
good way to get cuttings to root, maybe it's a good root stimulant too?
Don't think it will do much for soil structure, but it might be fun to see
how Iris respond to it.
Here's something funny. Last winter while in Colorado I cut a bunch of
Poplar, Willow, and Dogwood twigs to propagate. I brought them home and
put them all in a bucket of water together. Most of the Poplars and
Dogwoods rooted right away, only about a third of the Willows rooted - go
figure.
