Neil, I am so glad IMM is doing her thing for you this year. She is not
happy with me this year, erratic girl that she is. But I still remember
the year I had constant bloom from a clump here from spring till hard
freeze.
I wish I knew the secret to keeping her blooming all the time. I
suspect part of it is keeping a loose root environment without doing too
much damage to existing roots.
Best bloom here has always been after I've dug heavily out of an
existing clump the preceeding year.
Transplanting seems to disagree with her pretty badly in the short term,
as you saw, & sets her back even more when she's divided down to
individual rhizomes.
I've wondered if regular (weekly?) deep rototilling all around the clump
would make her happy, but haven't had the energy to try it. I tried
dumping a huge wheelbarrow load of horsemanure next to one clump a few
weeks ago....maybe by spring, I will get it dug in, or at least
spadefork around it.
