Re: HIST: 1939 checklist and meta discussion

I am actually very much in favor of indicating what
information the 39 checklist contained when creating a
new entry for more advanced checklists. But I am also
in favor of creating better descriptions when none
existed in the original list. The idea that because
the list represented the "official" registration and
therefore can not be annotated seems folly to me, but
I have heard of people advocating just that. It is if
one can not learn any more but knowledge must be
frozen in some past time seems a bit silly. The SIGNA
checklist, lists many entries from the 39 checklist,
but goes back to references cited in the 39 checklist
to provide descriptions. It also adds new knowledge
such as chromosome counts. Checklists should be
dynamic working documents that respond to needs of the
present while documenting the past.
