I'm thinking 12 gauge, with slugs being the most effective.

Dogs in the yard are pretty effective. Perhaps a motion sensor along
with some lights and noise makers for daytime use would help.

If your friends are here in Northern VA, then the real problem is the
deer over-population along with the human sprawl leasing to reduced
grazing areas that are rapidly over grazed leading the deer to search
out new grazing areas.

The herd needs to be thinned out. Fairfax county brought in some
sharpshooters a few years ago, and they failed to bag many deer. They do
not need sharpshooters, they need hunters, particularly those who are
familiar with the area and the deer's habits. The Bambi lovers need to
be ignored. I've hunted deer before (normal (shotgun) and musket
seasons), and it is not an easy thing to do. Deer are pretty intelligent
creatures. They learn and adapt. Of course, there is nothing like fresh
venison for dinner!

Did someone recently mention an effective deer repellent? I checked the
last
few months' mail but couldn't unearth it. A friend's irises are being
eaten.

Here in Missouri, the natural predators have been eliminated, thus the deer
population doubles about every year. With the freeze this spring, their most
abundant food, acorns, will be in short supply......thus I expect lots of
vegetation damage. Might be good to hang some dial soap, mulch with human hair
& shoot!
