I've started putting all new irises here in pots of dirty perlite (with manure in the bottom of the pot).
Of the irises new here last fall, only LIGHTSHINE, RIDE THE TIGER, and SATURN have come thru the year in really good shape.
They were doing so well this spring, I made the mistake of leaving them outdoors during the freeze thinking they'd be ok. Lost bloom on LIGHTSHINE and SATURN, but RIDE THE TIGER bloomed. It was stunted and no pollen, but pretty tough to bloom in spite of everything! It's one that has sense enough to drop foliage during drought - leafing out again now that I've moved it where I can more easily keep it watered.
I think I only lost three of the "new" potted irises this time - NEW DAY DAWNING, which held up so well to the erratic winter temperatures, but then rotted in warmer temps; CLEARANCE SALE; and DECADENCE.
Lost nearly all of the scraps of things I'd potted up from the gravel rows to see if I could nurse them back to health, but that was mostly my fault. Just couldn't take care of them in this weather, & they were already in bad shape when I potted them. No sorrow over those losses - obviously not fit to add to the gene pool here.
